Hardcoded Industry Logic
"Who signed off on this working paper?" shouldn't require checking a shared drive's file history.
Generic file storage can hold a folder of working papers, but it has no concept of a preparer and a reviewer being different people, or of an engagement's financial year and audit type. Firms end up tracking sign-off status by filename convention or a separate checklist that isn't attached to the actual files.
From engagement to signed-off working paper
A working paper can't be marked reviewed before it's been prepared — a real, enforced sequence, not just two checkboxes.
Open the engagement
Statutory audit, tax audit, internal audit, or review — per client, per financial year, with a lead partner assigned.
Add working papers by section
Cash & Bank, Revenue, Fixed Assets — each section is its own record, starting in Draft.
Mark prepared
The preparer signs off — the paper moves from Draft to Prepared, with their identity recorded.
Mark reviewed
Only possible once a paper is Prepared — a real reviewer sign-off, not a second checkbox anyone could tick.
Where this shows up in your day
Audit Managers
Need to see how many working papers on an engagement are still unreviewed before sign-off.
Reviewed-vs-total count is visible per engagement, in real time.
Reviewing Partners
Need confidence that every paper they're reviewing was actually prepared first.
The Prepared step is enforced before Reviewed is even possible.
Articled Assistants
Need a clear queue of which sections they still need to prepare.
Each working paper's status is real, not a mental checklist.
Multi-Client Firms
Run several engagements — statutory, tax, internal — for different clients in parallel.
Every engagement and its papers are scoped to the right client and year.
One engagement, section by section
A statutory audit engagement is opened for a client, financial year 2025-26, with a lead partner assigned.
A working paper is added for the Cash & Bank section: a bank reconciliation as of the year-end.
The preparer completes the reconciliation and marks the paper Prepared.
A reviewer opens the same paper and marks it Reviewed — a step that was blocked while it was still in Draft.
The engagement's dashboard shows exactly how many of its working papers are reviewed, section by section.

CRM Pipeline
Every engagement attaches to the same Client record your CRM already tracks.

Compliance audits against a named standard use a distinct module — ISO Audits with NCR & CAPA — since they're a different kind of audit entirely.

How live-computed statuses like invoice overdue replace the nightly batch job pattern that leaves dashboards and reports quietly showing yesterday's truth instead of today's.
